ABATE recommends the following safety tips for motorists, developed by the Michigan Safety Management System and the Office of Highway Safety Planning:

·         Anticipate problems and predict reactions.

·         Give yourself at least a 2-second cushion between yourself and the driver or rider ahead of you. Use a 5-second cushion in poor driving conditions or at higher speeds.

·         Watch left turns. Most accidents between vehicles and motorcycles involve left turns at intersections.

·         Share the road with motorcyclists and treat them with the same courtesy as you would other motorists.

·         Motorcyclists should always ride staggered and use their hand signals.

·         All motorists should always obey traffic laws and NEVER drink and ride.

ABATE of Michigan promotes safety, educational and awareness programs that help all motorists share the road safely.
