Well, here we go again.
Let me start out with a big thank you to Jim Rhoades, Herb Rials and Brian Yinger. Well, here we go again.
Let me start out with a big thank you to Jim Rhoades, Herb Rials and Brian Yinger. The three of them took time out of their day and went to Lansing to speak with Representative Price who is the sponsor of HB 5696. This bill is a noise bill. After Jim, Herb and Brian went and spoke with her she decided to pull the bill. We all thought that was great news although we knew it was temporary and figured it would be reintroduced eventually. Well, I don’t know if the engine in Jim’s van was cooled off from the drive home when we found out she reintroduced a substitute bill and it passed the second reading in the house by a voice vote. Just so everyone knows what the bill states.
*If you are on your motorcycle on a street that has a speed limit lower than 35 mph the noise level from your exhaust has to be lower than 82 decibels.
*If the speed limit is more than 35 mph the limit is the limit is 86 decibels.
To compare that to something we all can relate to, the blender many of you use to make margaritas out of is 85 decibels. After you drink your margaritas at a party and the music starts playing and you’re talking loud you just broke 90 decibels. When you get home from the party and realize you locked your keys in the house and decide to drill out the lock to get into your house the electric drill you use is 95 decibels. That’s correct people, everything you did that night will be louder than your motorcycle can be.
If you have a loud car the news is worse. Your car traveling on a street with a speed limit under 35 the noise level must be below 74 decibels and a street that is over 35 mph speed limit is below 77 decibels. So, please email or call your Representative and Senator before the third reading happens. When that happens, it will be voted on and if passed in the house it will go to the senate. Please call and let your friends with muscle cars know this info. too!
On another note, I would like to thank Rob “Cowboy” Sluiter for stepping up to take over
Region 8 & also, Steve “General” Graves for stepping up to take over Region 20.
One last person I want to thank is Dan “Tiny” Patterson for stepping back into the Region 5 RC position. Please everyone attend a meeting or event. We do need your support and you can get the information you need to ride free at one of these places.
Ride safe and ride free until next time.
